Spring on the Back Roads

Bright blooms of lavender
against a backdrop of fresh new green

The scent of lilacs
coming thru the window

As the lacy curtains move
gently in the breeze

A meadowlark sings merrily
from the fencepost near the barn

The old tomcat sleeps on the porch
in his favorite spot in the sun

Across the road, the new black calves
kick up their heels and play

As the old cows graze nearby
lazily swinging their tails from side to side

The low drone of the neighbor’s John Deere
on the far hillside as he plants corn

Dust billowing in the air
as he makes another round

These are the sights, scents, and sounds
of Spring along the Iowa back roads
